The Maidens Tower is located in Istanbul on the Bosphorus or Bogaz, and is otherwise
known as Kiz Kulesi. The romantic tourist attraction is surrounded by a number of myths.
The most famous one involves a Sultan who goes to extraordinary lengths to avert a
tragic destiny prophesized for his beloved daughter by an oracle. According to the myth,
the oracle tells the Sultan that his daughter will die on her eighteenth birthday after being
stung by a deadly snake.

middle of the Bosphorus, as far as possible from any snakes.
The daughter lives happily in the tower for years. On her
eighteenth birthday, her delighted father brings out a basket of
wonderful fruits to celebrate. Unfortunately, an asp somehow
finds its way into the basket and stings the young princess as
she reaches for a fruit. Tragically, she dies in her father’s arms.
And so was born the legend of Kiz Kulesi. Maybe the moral of
the story is that we can unwittingly fulfill a destiny in trying so
desperately hard to prevent it.
