The Legend of Kiz Kulesi, Istanbul
The Maidens Tower is located in Istanbul on the Bosphorus or Bogaz, and is
otherwise known as Kiz Kulesi. The romantic tourist attraction is surrounded by
a number of myths. The most famous one involves a Sultan who goes to
extraordinary lengths to avert a tragic destiny prophesized for his beloved
daughter by an oracle. According to the myth, the oracle tells the Sultan that his
daughter will die on her eighteenth birthday after being bitten by a deadly snake.
To avoid this terrible fate, the sultan has the tower
built in the middle of the Bosphorus, as far as
possible from any snakes. The daughter lives happily
in the tower for years. On her eighteenth birthday, her
delighted father brings out a basket of wonderful fruits
to celebrate. Unfortunately, an asp somehow finds its
way into the basket and bites the young princess as
she reaches for a fruit. Tragically, she dies in her
father’s arms. And so was born the legend of Kiz
Kulesi. Maybe the moral of the story is that we can
unwittingly fulfill a destiny in trying so desperately hard
to prevent it.

How many stars does the current American flag have? Throughout World War II
and until 1958, the American flag had 48 stars, as in the image below. After the
statehood of Alaska and Hawaii, the flag took on 50 stars.

An indelible part of Turkish

World War One. In marking
the 100 year anniversary of
this bitter struggle for
control of the Dardanelles,
ceremonies were recently
held to honor the fallen
soldiers of Turkey, Great

beaches and fields where
terrible battles were once
fought are now quiet. But
